Uptown: Columbia/ Morningside Heights
Columbia University
Originally named King’s College, after King George II of
England. The oldest university in New York state. After the American Revolution
ended the Americans decided to change the name because they did not want
anything related to King George or Britain in the new land. For this reason the
university is now named Columbia University. They chose this name because it
described the patriotism of the nation’s quest for independence.

My Thoughts . . .
My first reaction to going to Uptown Manhattan, and the Columbia University area was that there would be a bunch of coffee shops where the college students can go grab a cup of coffee, and have "intellectual arguments" porbably about politics or maybe there classes. I know it sounds cliche but after going to Columbia University it didnt seem so intimidating, I thought it would be intimidating because that school is an Ivy league school. After learning that this University is the oldest in New York I was astonished because it still looks so beautiful.
When I first saw Morningside Park, in my head i was picturing a regular park with a field, and a playground, possibly some picnic tables. But when I saw it, it was very different. What i enjoyed about Morningside Park was its landscape I havent seen a park that goes downhil like that. I like that this park is very unique than other parks I have been to.
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine was magnificent. It was so big I couldnt even take a picture of the whole cathedral. I'm astounded by its size because the biggest church I have ever seen was in my hometown, St. Hugh's Church. Going to the cathedral I made generalization's that there will be many statutes around of saints especially of St. John because its named after him. What I enjoyed about this cathedral was that the statutes were made as a part of the Cathedral which I thought was really amazing.
I also did not expect Riverside Church to be so big, but when i learned John D. Rockefeller sponsered the funding for the creation of this church I understood why it was made so big. Because John D. Rockefeller was very well known in the 1900's for being a very wealthy and prosperous man, it would make sense that he build a big church. I really liked the architecture of it too.
Riverside Park I also expected to be different becasue I'm so used to a different view of a park being just a playground for kids to enjoy, I underestimated it . But now that I am older I can see how this park can attract people of many ages because it isnt confined to just a playground, there are museums around there and also many people can jog alongside the view of the Hudson River.
Last but not least, Grant's Tomb which also right by Riverside Park. At first when you look at the masoleum I did not expect Grant's Tomb to be inside there. I expected it to be in a cemetery or all by itself somewhere secluded. I thought the idea of Grant and his wife being buried together was very cute. Grant's Tomb was interesting because it's not everyday thing you can say I saw a famous general's tomb.
Overall I enjoyed this project because it provided with a different view of New York besides the Times Square perspective most people connotate New York with. I liked learning about all the other things New York had to offer.
